From whence did this cartoon idea spring? Well, I believe that we are a generation of writers (and please correct me if I’m wrong here, my generation) who come up with the PhD dissertation on our stories simultaneous with actually composing the stories themselves. We’re over-educated, in other words. Meta-post-modernists. The narrative structure keeps stepping in front of the characters, the underlying themes keep surfacing to become the foundation of the plot, et cetera. It’s hard to shake the habit of pleasing one’s college professors, I suppose, when our love for literature is so intimately entwined with an analysis thereof. Or maybe that’s just how I feel on a bad day of writing… To the sketchpad!
