Book of the Week: The Law of Strings, by Steven Gillis

Our new feature is Steven Gillis’s most recent story collection, The Law of Strings (Atticus Books, 2012). Gillis is the author of four previous novels, Consequence of Skating (2010), Temporary People (2008), The Weight of Nothing (2005), and Walter Falls (2004), as well as an earlier story collection, Giraffes (2007). Book of the Week: We Sinners, by Hanna Pylväinen

Our new feature is Hanna Pylväinen‘s debut novel, We Sinners (Henry Holt & Co). Pylväinen is from suburban Detroit. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College and received her MFA from the University of Michigan, where she was also a postgraduate Zell Fellow. She is the recipient of residencies at The MacDowell Colony and Yaddo, and a fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachussetts. Book of the Week: Rise, by L. Annette Binder

Our new feature is L. Annette Binder‘s debut story collection, Rise (Sarabande). Binder was born in Germany and grew up in Colorado. She has degrees from Harvard, Berkeley, and the Programs in Writing at the University of California, Irvine. Rise received the 2011 Mary McCarthy Prize in Short Fiction, selected by Laura Kasischke. Book of the Week: The Boiling Season, by Christopher Hebert

Our new feature is Christopher Hebert‘s debut novel, The Boiling Season (Harper). Hebert graduated from Antioch College, where he also worked at the Antioch Review. He has spent time in Guatemala and taught in Mexico, and he worked as a research assistant to the author Susan Cheever. He earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Michigan, and was awarded its prestigious Hopwood Award for fiction. He is Jack E.
