Great interview. I've been loving the diary for about 6 years, too. Another huzzah for the comment-less forum. It really does make it more personal and more literary. Plus, I don't end up getting annoyed by the people who like the same thing as I and then start doubting my own taste.

I've been reading Mimi's blog for years, and have e-mailed back and forth a few times.

I am SO GLAD there isn't a comment section. It would ruin the whole thing for me. When I read a good book, I want to be alone with my thoughts. Can you imagine having to read comments after closing a book for the last time?

Mimi's blog is more like a book now that I think of it.

Krzys, if you search for "Mimi Smartypants" on Goodreads, you'll find her. I think she wrote something months ago about being willing to be your Goodreads pal even if she doesn't know you. It's really fun to see what one of your favorite diarists/bloggers/whateverists is reading. And her list is impressive, both in breadth and quantity.

Thanks to everyone involved for this interview -- it was great to see a thoughtful reflection on this whole blogging thing from one of my favorite online writers.

Excellent interview; I stumbled across Ms. Mimi maybe 6 years ago or so - since she lives in Chicago and I transplanted out (and miss it) so I love when she talks about alley trash and her adventures on the CTA!

I liked your use of "monogamous" to describe reading her work and I have to agree... I love the lack of comments. I much prefer writing to her myself when I want to offer something back or she's looking for input (as she occasionally does) and not having my interpretation sullied by someone else.

I'm selfish like that. :)

How does this independent objective reviewer know MS's Goodreads username? (What I'm really saying is: I too would like to know MS's Goodreads username!)

I have been a huge fan of Mimi Smartypants for a long while now--my husband found her site first and kept sending me funny bits (the first hit is free!) and finally I went over to see it for myself, started reading, and didn't emerge for 3 straight days, what with all of the general awesomeness and snark.

I love many things about Mimi Smartypants's writing, but Margaret, I think you hit the main one with this: "That sense of seeing something described that you had never seen put into words, that you would have assumed could never be put into words, yet finding that seemingly singular and resistant thing rendered perfectly specific and clear, even sonorous, and, maybe even funny."

That. Anyway, I'm so thrilled to see this crossover between two amazing sites. Thanks, Margaret and Mimi, for the insightful interview.
