Emerging Writers Network’s Dan Wickett is devoting May to reading and discussing short stories; his goal is three a day for a month — so just under 100 stories. Be sure to check it out.

And let’s try a sister-experiment here: FWR contributors and readers, I invite/challenge (whichever word you find more motivating) each of you to read or re-read some short stories in May and write to me about one of them that really rocks your writerly world. I’m not talking full-scale reviews (though if what you write becomes something longer, that’s OK)…just a paragraph or even a couple of sentences about why you’d recommend this story to other writers.

Send any and all short story recs to: annestameshkin@gmail.com or fictionwritersreview@gmail.com
(And you don’t need to wait until May 1 either.)

Whoa! That’s an ambitious goal. I know I do like to read short stories, as they are short enough to finish on the metro, and good to read when you don’t have a ton of time to get through a novel, but it’s hard to think of any SPECIFIC stories I’ve read lately. However, my favourite all-time short story has to be Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Truman Capote just really gets the character of Holly Golightly so right. You don’t even care that she’s basically a jerk, since she’s got so much personality. Plus it’s all about the romance of New York City, how anything can happen, and you can make a name for yourself even if you come from nowhere. Brilliant.

I will have to read another Capote story now, although Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a tough act to follow!
