Gadgets, online personae, and constant motion threaten the extinction of solitude. Does our need for incessant connection threaten creativity?

We’ve talked before about the love-hate relationship many writers have with Facebook. On the one hand, it allows writers to connect with friends, fellow authors, and fans, making that whole writing thing feel a little less lonely. On the other hand—timewasting! timewasting! timewasting! Maybe you want to spend time on a social network and feel productive. In that case, Mashable has compiled a list of 10 social networks geared specifically towards writers. From Inked-In to Writertopia to We Like to Write, each offers different support to writers: critiquing, paid work, or just a community of other writers. Do you know […]
We’re delighted to present another post by FWR’s editorial intern, Nicole Aber. Enjoy! Now that Facebook has conquered the world of social networking, could it be setting its sights on online publishing? Rumors have been spiraling recently about Facebook’s acquisition of e-book publishing company Push Pop Press. But the social networking giant says it won’t be dabbling in the e-book world anytime soon. Instead, it says that it will employ the technological know-how of the company—which released Al Gore’s e-book Our Choice—in its ubiquitous social networking platform. A press release on Push Pop’s site reads: Now we’re taking our publishing […]
Each week Fiction Writers Review gives away several free copies of a featured novel or story collection as part of our Book-of-the-Week program. Last week we featured Alison Espach’s debut, The Adults, and we’re pleased to announce the winners: Annie Angelides, Vanessa Heng, and Jackie Reitzes. Congratulations! Each will receive a signed copy of Espach’s novel. This week we’re pleased to feature Michael David Lukas’s debut novel The Oracle of Stamboul (Harper). Lukas has been a Fulbright scholar in Turkey, a late-shift proofreader in Tel Aviv, and a Rotary scholar in Tunisia. His writing—fiction and nonfiction—has been published in the […]
Every few weeks, we launch a new Fiction Writers Review “Flipbook.” During the past two and a half years, we’ve featured more than 50 interviews with authors established and emerging. They’ve had such valuable insights into the writing life – from thoughts on process and craft to ideas about community and influence – that we wanted to find a way to further these conversations within our community. Each Flipbook highlights some of the very best of the conversations on our site, centered around a particular topic. Our latest Flipbook is now up on the FWR Facebook page, with an exclusive […]
We’re always on the lookout for new ways to inspire, encourage, and challenge our fellow readers and writers. And they’ve had such valuable insights into the writing life – from thoughts on process and craft to ideas about community and influence – that we wanted to find a way to further these conversations within our writing community. So we’re pleased to announce the Fiction Writers Review “Flipbook.” Flipbooks debut today on the FWR Facebook page. Every few weeks we’ll post a […]
A little over a week ago, we announced that the Fiction Writers Review Facebook Page was closing in on the 1,000 Fan Milestone. First and foremost, we’d like to thank you for your support. The response to our weekly Book of the Week giveaway has been excellent. Not only are we thrilled to have the opportunity to publicize books we love, and to put them in the hands of our readers, but it’s also been great to have so many of you–writers, editors, publishers, booksellers, agents, and fellow readers–come together to help us spread the word. After all, the more […]
At the end of August, Fiction Writers Review launched a Fan Page on Facebook. The goal was threefold: to introduce new readers to FWR, to create an informal place for conversations about writing, and to give away lots of free books. And though we’d always hoped this project would also help bring together a thriving literary community, we had no idea it would happen so quickly! After just two months, our Facebook community has grown to over 950 friends and we fast approach 1,000. Still, the best surprise has been in the wonderful range of individuals who have joined us […]
