Book of the Week: The Carrion Birds, by Urban Waite

This week’s feature is Urban Waite’s new novel, The Carrion Birds, which was published last week by William Morrow. Urban Waite is the author of The Terror of Living, named one of Esquire‘s Ten Best Books of 2011. His short fiction has appeared in the Best of the West 2009 anthology, the Southern Review, and other journals. He has degrees from the University of Washington, Western Washington University, and Emerson College. He lives in Seattle with his wife. Our newest feature is Elizabeth Huergo’s debut novel, The Death of Fidel Pérez, which was published this month by Unbridled Books. Elizabeth Huergo was born in Havana and immigrated to the United States at an early age as a political refugee. Her work has been published in such places as Diaspora and Potomoc Review, as well as anthologized in such collections as I Go to the Ruined Place: Contemporary Poems in Defense of Global Human Rights and Gravity Dancers: Even More Fiction by Washington Area Women. Our newest feature is Kevin Smokler’s most recent book, Practical Classics: 50 Reasons to Reread 50 Books You Haven’t Touched Since High School, which was published last month by Prometheus Books. Smokler is the editor of Bookmark Now: Writing in Unreaderly Times, a San Francisco Chronicle Notable Book of 2005. Our newest feature is Jared Yates Sexton’s debut story collection An End to All Things, which was published by Atticus Books. Sexton received his MFA in fiction from Southern Illinois University, where he worked with writers Beth Lordan, Pinckney Benedict, Jacinda Townsend, Allison Joseph, and Rodney Jones. In the spring of 2012, he joined the creative writing faculty at Georgia Southern University. His stories and articles have appeared in numerous publications.
